Recognize the chairs above? The man pictured with them is their designer, Verner Panton.

Born in Denmark in 1926, Verner Panton is a iconic designer of modern classic furniture, textiles and lighting. He began his studies in architectural engineering at Odense Technical School at the age of 18. He then went on to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen to continue his studies. Prior to graduating in 1951, Panton’s mentor Poul Henningsen introduced Panton to Arne Jacobsen, another iconic modern classic designer.

After two years in Jacobsen’s firm, Panton toured Europe for three years in a Volkswagen van. His journeys and studies paved the way for an extremely successful career, as he established connections with potential colleagues and manufacturers. In 1955, two of Panton’s chairs began production.
