Seat height is an important thing to think about when choosing stools for your bar or counter. You don’t want people spilling food or drink all over themselves because the counter is too far away from their stool!
The first step is determine whether your counter is considered counter height or bar height. Counter height is typically defined as 35″ to 39″ tall. Bar counter height is typically 40″ to 45″ high.
A general rule of thumb to follow when looking for counter stools or bar stools is to look for a seat height that is anywhere from 9 to 13 inches less than your counter height. The seat height measures from the floor to the top of the seat, not to the back of the chair. Counter stools generally have a seat height of 22″ to 26″ inches tall, with bar stools at about 27″ to 32″ high.
These measurements are important to notate, because you don’t want to buy a bar stool with a 32″ seat height and then find that your counter is only 35″ high!
