Last year, I had the chance to ask Ted Toledano a few questions about him and his company, Modloft.
1) Do you take part in the design process? If so, where do you find inspiration for designs? If no, do you have a team of designers, or how does the collection come together?
Many of Modloft’s designs are influenced from the simplicity and geometry commonly found coming out of the Bauhaus School of design. Modloft has a small team of young, talented furniture designers that combine the latest Euro trends with sound engineering principles. The effort to create a single piece is truly collaborative among a group of passionate individuals.
2) What can we expect from Modloft in the near future?
As proud as we are of our past, we are equally enthusiastic about our future. Soon, there will be a Modloft dealer in every metropolitan city in the United States and abroad. Our range will continue expanding beyond the residential markets, and into commercial projects such as hotels, restaurants and bars.
3) How did the inspiration for Modloft come about?
The story of Modloft originates in Venice, Italy where we began importing and distributing the very best contemporary furniture. Soon after, we set out to reinvent the brand into a different image – a unique blend of urban modern style with practical affordability. We aspired to create a lower priced alternative to modern furniture for urban dwellers seeking to live “modern on a budget”. The result was an affordable European quality collection inspired from New York style lofts and today’s smaller living spaces
4) As founder/managing partner, what would you say is the best part of your role at Modloft?
Product development has long been the most enjoyable aspect of building Modloft. To know that a design that began on a napkin can ultimately end up in thousands of homes is very exciting (that’s hardly the common route, but it has happened!).
5) If you could furnish the entire home of any celebrity, who would you choose and why?
I’d say Oprah Winfrey. I’m sure you can figure out how that would be good for business.
6) What is your favorite product of Modloft’s and what makes it your favorite?
The Luxo Foley Bench/Stool. Furniture is meant to live in the background, but this piece is full of life and starts many conversations.
7) I see you live in Miami, FL. What are your favorite things to do there outside of Modloft?
Miami is famous for its vibrant nightlife, trendy restaurants, and beautiful beaches. One day I plan to see these things if I can leave the office at a reasonable hour.
Be sure to check out all of the awesome products that Modloft offers at Inmod, including the Worth Bed shown above.
