Public Art/Hometown Pride

A few years ago, an exhibition called Cow Parade took New York City by storm: hundreds of life size fiberglass cows went on display, each one unique, designed & created by an artist. They were fun, inspiring, clever pieces of public art. At the end of the exhibition, the cows were auctioned off. Each year, this event takes place in different cities around the world, with new cows for the public to enjoy. I’ve since seen several riffs on this idea. Catskill, New York, located on the Hudson River, features a clowder (thank you, Wikipedia) of decorated cat statues every summer. They are auctioned off in the fall, with proceeds benefitting local agencies. Woodstock, New York, has, naturally, chosen to be represented by guitars. I was there last weekend, and got the chance to admire several in town. They’re designed by local artists, and Woodstock certainly doesn’t lack in the creativity department. Lastly, there is Buffalo, NY, in the same state but hundreds of miles away from NYC and the Hudson Valley, where Woodstock & Catskill are located. So what fiberglass figure do you think the fair city of Buffalo chose to represent their town? That’s correct: Canadian geese! Of course I’m joking. Buffalo is represented by buffalo. The Herd About Buffalo project raised money for cancer research and patient care at a local facility.
So, did I happen to stumble upon the only four towns/cities in America that have incorporated fiberglass sculptures into their public art displays, or have you heard of other places that do this?
