As partners in marriage and design, Charles and Ray Eames created several iconic modern classics during their careers. Known for the Plywood Dining Chair and La Chaise, the story of Charles and Ray Eames is as endearing as their furniture.
Charles and Ray were married in 1941 and then moved to Southern California. In the late 1940s, their furniture designs were popularized by Herman Miller, so Ray abandoned her work with the journal “Art and Architecture†to further develop Eames Design with Charles.
In addition to their iconic furniture designs, Charles and Ray created toys, landmark exhibitions and short films. In 1949, they designed and built a home for a case study project conducted by “Art and Architecture. They designed and created throughout the 1970s, until Charles’s untimely death on August 21, 1978. Ray Eames died exactly ten years to the day later, on August 21, 1988.
