If you’re feeling reluctant about area rugs, we’ve got a few tips on bringing them into your modern home. How do you choose an area rug? Sometimes it all depends on what room you need a rug for.
For example, when searching for a rug for the dining room, it is suggested that the area rug extend two feet beyond the chairs around the entire perimeter. In a living room or family room, the rug should be at least two feet smaller than the shortest wall so that there is some open space and the rug doesn’t look like wall-to-wall carpeting.
Within the bedroom, you can get a smaller rug and place it halfway to one-third of the way under the bed so that you have a nice carpeted area around the majority of the bed. Or, you can opt for a larger rug and go all the way under the bed so that nightstands are also included on the rug.
When push comes to shove, these are just guidelines and suggestions for placing area rugs within your home. You may prefer a look that completely goes against the rules, which is fine – as long as you like it! To make sure you’re choosing the right size, try envisioning the area with a rug by placing towels or newspapers in the designated spot. Painter’s tape also works!
