You may not recognize the name, but chances are you’ve seen Harry Bertoia’s Wire Chairs around. Starting with the iconic Diamond Chair in 1952, Bertoia had a way of working with metal to create an interesting array of modern chairs.
Born in Italy in 1915, Harry Bertoia came to America at the age of 15. He immediately went on to study at various art schools, including the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. At Cranbrook, Bertoia studied with other iconic designers such as Florence Knoll, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen.
After studying at Cranbrook, Bertoia stayed on to teach metalworking. In 1943, he headed to California to work with Charles Eames. When that didn’t work out as planned, Harry moved to Pennsylvania to work with Florence Knoll and her husband at their design company. It was through Knoll that the Diamond and Wire Chairs became so successful.
